Have you ever wondered how lucky you are to be here, in Singapore with friends and a social life. Everyday you talk with people, strangers and more. You get to feel the soft wind and the earthy smell of the dirt. Those seemingly small actions of human interaction is actually very important in our life. When taken away, it leaves a gaping void that not even endless video games and relaxation can fill. Now, double that stress with taking care of two rowdy children and juggling work. And chores. And trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle when literally everything organic is double the price and toilet paper is constantly being sold out. However, that was the life my Mum and probably the majority of working Mum’s in the world had. Crazy right?
My Mum was extremely strong-willed. When COVID-19 struck, she kept a calm face when inside she was worried about many things you take for granted. Will the veggies run out of the local grocery store. How will I send my kids to school? Despite those thoughts, she powered her way through daily struggles with a calm face. Often you would find my Mum staying up late to finish her work before finally going to sleep. She would also educate us kids and make sure we never touched anything dirty, always cleaned our hands before eating and did not disturb the uncle renting our basement. Finally, all her hard work paid off. Neither me or my sister got covid and we returned to our normal life. Lessons: to not give up when everything looks grey. And to adapt to difficult situations with flexibility.
