Grandfather’s Partition Story

In the year 1947, when India was divided into India and Pakistan, my grandfather was only twelve years old. He lived in a small village near Lahore with his parents, brothers, and sisters. Life was peaceful, and people of different religions lived together like one family.

But everything changed during the Partition. Suddenly, there was fear everywhere. People had to leave their homes and move to safer places. My grandfather remembered hearing loud cries, crowded streets, and families packing only a few belongings. His family had to leave their home overnight.

They traveled in a crowded train to India. The journey was difficult and frightening. There was very little food and water. People were worried and sad because they did not know what would happen next. My grandfather’s mother kept the children close and prayed for safety throughout the journey.
When they finally reached India, they had nothing except hope and courage. They stayed in a refugee camp for some time. Slowly, with hard work and determination, the family started a new life in Mumbai. My great-grandfather opened a tiny shop, and everyone worked together to support the family.

Even after many years, my grandfather never forgot his old home, friends, and village. He often told us that the Partition taught him the value of peace, kindness, and unity. He always said, “People may be divided by borders, but humanity should never be divided.”
His story reminds me how strong and brave people can be during difficult times. It also teaches us to respect each other and live together peacefully.
Moral: Unity, peace, and humanity are more important than differences.
